My Best "Thank You"

Grandparents are without a doubt one of the greatest blessings in the whole world and I am fortunate enough to have had nine (yes, nine) of them. They're kind of like Disney movies -- it's impossible to pick a favorite. Each of my grandparents means so much to me and I so badly wish I could've lived next door to all of them growing up. I was lucky enough, however, to live just a short 30 minutes away from my Grandma and Grandpa Roush for the first 17 years of my life. My siblings and I have spent so much time at their house over the years. I know because of that, these two in particular have had a huge impact on the person I've become today. I wanted to find a way to let them know how much they mean to me, because I'm not sure I've ever told them. Some of my best childhood memories can be attributed to weekends spent at my Grandma Marilyn and Grandpa Jerry's. My siblings and I would spend our days climbing trees, having water fights, and eating toma...

How to Choose Joy in Three Ways

Truth time: This season I'm in right now... is a lot harder than I thought (and I'm not talking about quarantine). Has life ever thrown something your way that catches you off guard completely? You have about a million  other problems you should be dealing with and this one is just the tip of the iceberg. Completely unexpected (and unauthorized, too). You're thinking  this isn't how it's supposed to be  or this wasn't my plan. Yeah, I feel you. And I know my problems are trivial in the grand scheme of everything that's going on in the world, but to me they're real and they're valid and they need to be dealt with. But how? Life didn't prepare me for this. I wasn't expecting this kind of hurt so I'm not exactly sure how I'm supposed to get through this. Wait... let me start over. Truth time: This season I'm in right now... is just a season. However you choose to fight your battles, know that they will (eventually)...

Behind the Blog

Hey everyone, welcome to my blog! I figured it was about time I tell you a little bit about me and why I decided to start blogging (just in case you were wondering). First things first, my name is Hannah (though my friends call me Han). I am currently a second year student at Iowa State where my most favorite things are Kairos, Dance Marathon, movie nights with friends and, of course, ISU football games! Over the past few years, I have found a passion for traveling, writing, education, and my faith -- so if you stick around you can expect to read a few posts on these topics. I got the crazy idea to start a blog over a year ago and if I'm being honest, I wasn't too fond of it at first. I carried the idea with me for about five months before finally deciding to share something that had been on my heart for a long time. Doing something like this is WAY outside my comfort zone, but I gave in and decided to start blogging for three reasons: Number 1: Over the past year,...

Ouch! That Stereotype Hurts

All my life, my mom told me I was going to be a teacher when I grew up. But I didn't believe her. In fact, I did everything in my power to prove her wrong. By the time college came around I had settled on a genetics major -- about as far away from an elementary school classroom as I could get. And right away I knew it wasn't the right fit for me. It wasn't until the end of my freshman year that I was ready to admit my mom had been right all along. My real passion was working with kids -- building relationships with them and watching them grow -- so, I switched my major to elementary education and I haven't once looked back. I really love what I'm doing now and even though I'm only one year in, I've learned so many things. After just one year I can confidently say that being an educator (in any capacity) is one of the most important, most influential jobs out there. Yet, at the same time, it's one of the most disrespected. When I first tell people ...
